The bout of the session
Serbia’s Vuk Milenkovic had a cut in the Round of 16 but their medical staff worked hard to make him ready to the important quarter-final against Ukraine’s Yosyp-Vladyslav Kozakevych at the 90kg. The Serbian did not find the best fighting distance in the first round but he stepped into the gas in the second and he turned back their quarter-final bout which means that he is now a medallist in Loznica.
The surprise of the session
Ukraine’s Nazar Kliuchko did not overestimate Georgia’s European U19 Champion from the Ostrava edition Luka Chkhikvadze and he used the best strategy against his opponent. The Ukrainian impressed in the last preparation event and he saved that form to the European U19 Championships as well. Kliuchko eliminated the defending champion and he will be boxing for the gold medal match with Belarus’ Bahdan Shashlykou who had a tight success against Ireland’s Jason Maher.
The Round-Up
Russia’s Umar Ibakhiyev had a tight success in the Round of 16 and he had difficulties against one of the most technician boxers of the 60kg, Italy’s Daniele Fabi. The Italian was gold medallist at the European U17 Boxing Championships last year and he had the full concentration to catch the Russian from counter-attacking range. The Italian danced through the full area of the ring and he taught his Russian opponent how to box from longer distance therefore Fabi is now a guaranteed medallist in Loznica.
Slovakia’s Kristian Harasnik and Azerbaijan’s Ali Baghishov both have strong international experience from the U17 and U19 events therefore their quarter-final at the 60kg was an anticipated fight in the evening session. Baghishov started slightly better in the first round and four out of the five judges favoured him after three minutes of fight. The Azeri boxer eliminated the European Junior Champion Harasnik and he will now meet in the last four Turkey’s Furkan Avar.
England’s promising star, Yashua Flemming lost only one bout during his entire career which he began at the age of 2. The English had an experienced rival as next, Azerbaijan’s former European junior medallist Shahin Aslanov who defeated a strong Russian in the previous round. Flemming competes only on his first European Championships but his single jabs and full concentration guaranteed his impressive quarter-final victory in Loznica where he will now meet Armenia’s Suren Katvalyan.
Germany’s Dietrich Hermann defeated Armenia’s European Youth Champion Samvel Siramargyan in the final of the Danas Pozniakas U19 Tournament in Lithuania earlier this year and the two pugilists faced once again in a re-match in Loznica. The German had 15cm height advantage and after the first tactical round, his jabs worked better from the second and he won their exhausting bout. The German changed his quarter-final position from the 2025 edition to a medal and he will now face Russia’s Prokhor Startsev.
Italy’s Tiberio Nocadello eliminated a tough Spanish in the last round and he was the favourite against Moldova’s Timofei Magdiuc and he accomplished his target with superb performance in their 80kg quarter-final today. Georgia’s Davit Mkhetsadze was too experienced for Serbia’s Djordje Djoric in the next Top8 bout for the medal and the Kutaisi-based boxer bagged his nation’s next medal in Loznica.
Montenegro’s Matija Roganovic, the European U17 Champion was in shape in the previous round but Belarus’ Nazar Stalchuk was too strong for him today at the 85kg. Following two preliminary victories, Spain’s Samuel Antezana outpointed Hungary’s Gyula Bozai with his longer hands and he became his nation’s third medallist in the European U19 Boxing Championships.
The Baltic nations had strong options at the 90kg weight class and firstly Latvia’s Markuss Reke demonstrated his progress against Italy’s Alessio Ballarin and he earned a medal in Loznica which is his new career highlight. The last year’s silver medallist from Ostrava, Daumantas Vilkas of Lithuania had was also a prospect for the podium but this time England’s Albe Dowell was too strong for him.
Romania’s Denis Cucu is the most powerful boxer at the super heavyweight and the 18-year-old proved his very best against Russia’s Ivan Baibakov. Cucu had the advantage on the scorecards after three minutes and the referee counted the Russian in the second round but Baibakov also showed his potential in the third. Cucu was tired in the last period and the Russian could make a huge U-turn in this hectic quarter-final bout.
